Down

Down care 101—gentle washing for puffy coats and bedding.

Down

Warm and light, down is a highly sought-after material for staying cozy during the cold months. Caring for your down feather jackets, pillows, and duvets does not have to be a headache. With a few tips and tricks and a bit of Soak Laundry Soap, you can have clean, fresh down, ready to take on the cold.

Check and pre-prep

Start by checking the care label to see if the down item is washable. Not sure? Check the manufacturer’s website for washing instructions or contact the company directly. If your down is washable, spot-clean any areas that need a little extra attention. Use undiluted Soak or your favourite stain remover, and let it sit for 15 minutes or more before washing.

Wash sparingly

Down should not be washed more than once or twice a year. If you notice a stain, spot-clean it as soon as possible before it has a chance to set.

If this is your first time using Soak on your coat or down item, spot-test it in an inconspicuous area first, then proceed to the Hand-wash or Machine-wash steps below.

Hand-wash

1.   Fill a sink, basin or bathtub with cool water.
2.    Add Soak Laundry Soap, then fully submerge the down item, making sure it is completely saturated.
3.   Let the item Soak for 15 minutes.
4.   Gently squeeze out the water—there’s no need to rinse.
5.    Roll or press the item in a towel to squeeze out extra moisture.

Machine-wash

1.   For smaller items, place the down item in an Eco Wash Bag. For larger items, place them directly in the washer drum.
2.    Use a front-loading machine if possible for an extra-gentle wash.

Drying

1.   Air-dry until the item is about 90 percent dry.
2.    Place the down item in the dryer and dry on the coolest, most gentle setting.
3.    Use dryer balls or clean tennis balls to help fluff the down and break up clumps.
4.    Check on the down frequently as it dries, about every 15 minutes, to ensure it is tumbling freely.
